With more than 22,200 Brits searching the internet for “70s fashion” every month*, and Pinterest searches for “70s outfits” steadily increasing in popularity throughout the year**, there’s no doubt that this AW season is going to be heavily influenced by the decade most remembered for its free-spirited mentality. After the past few years of lockdowns and restrictions- it seems only natural.

Describing the aesthetic, fashion mavens are dubbing ‘Nuboheme’, Rhi Robert, fashion buyer and styling expert at Oliver Bonassays “This season we’re predicting a fresh take on the free-spirited trends of the 70s. Nuboheme captures that sense of optimism, freedom and playful eclecticism with fashion and brings it into the 21st century.

“Embrace the aesthetic with wildflower patterns mixed with refined accessories, embroidery and patchwork with western boots, and vintage volume paired with handcrafted jewellery. Taking inspiration from  artisanal crafts and textiles to create pieces that celebrate the maker and the craft.”

6 Ways to wear the Nuboheme trend, according to Rhi Roberts:

  1. Seasonal Midi Dresses

“The midi dress is going to still be a staple, but with a seasonal twist,” says Rhi. “ The sleeves are getting longer, and the colours are inspired by the changes in nature around us. Expect to see more burnt reds, shades of mustard and olive greens, with bold floral and animal prints that will make sure you stand out from the crowd.”

“Patchwork is a staple for this 70s style. Layer with chunky cable knits and trainers for daytime wearing, and switch up for blazers and block-heels for a simple after-work look.”

  1. Artisanal Bags

“Patched fabrics and refined craftwork-inspired details such as embroidery and whip stitch will elevate even the simplest bag this season. Colour-blocking bold shades of  ochre, peach and burnt orange with bold animal prints will be what separates these bags from the rest of the pack,” Rhi says.

“Whether it be a cross body, backpack or weekend bag, this season’s bags make a textural statement and are the perfect way to complete any Nuboheme look.”

  1. Pretty in Paisley Print

According to Rhi, paisley is definitely back. “It’s the iconic 70s print,” she says, “No 70s trend is complete without a little paisley.”

“It’s not as muted as it was back then, though,” she adds. “This season’s paisley print is bigger and bolder than ever. We’re seeing more metallic threads being used to put a futuristic twist on this print, and of course, the colours have been updated for 2022. Pinks, yellows and soft blues are the colours of the moment, especially when it comes to fun fashion.”

“The print is such a great transitional pattern and can be worn from head to toe; head scarves and scrunchies are one way to offer a nod to the retro print if you’re thinking of experimenting with the trend before committing to something less subtle.”

  1. Vintage and Volume

Tops are emanating romance, with dramatic details and voluminous sleeves,” says Rhi. “It’s a very vintage feel. We’re also bringing back iconic 70s styles like deep-V necks and open collar pieces, that deliver an authentic retro vibe no matter how you style them.”

“Broderie and embroidered frills are going to be everywhere,” Rhi adds. “Blouses with big details like these can be overwhelming to style, if you’re not used to so much volume. You want to balance it out, so if your blouse is full of volume or dramatic details, you want to keep your bottoms tailored. Or, if you’re feeling the full retro vibe, a great pair of flares.”

  1. Wild Wild West

Rhi says to expect to see a lot of well crafted and detailed accessories, best described as ‘western’ this season. “Think oversized belt buckles with incredible studwork, saddle bags with a modern twist, and an updated take on cowboy boots – these are all going to be huge this AW,” according to Rhi.

“If the western trend feels a bit complicated and you’re worried about coming across too costumey, then start small. Neck scarves are a great way to incorporate a little bit of country into your look, especially paired with some great denim and a well-made leather saddle bag.

“Or, try a modern pair of cowboy boots, but paired back with a floral midi dress or denim jumpsuit. Keep your western nod small, but noticeable.”

  1. Handcrafted Jewellery

“Jewellery is totally elevated this season, and we’re seeing textiles like resin taking over for Autumn, and colour combos like tortoiseshell and gold are going to be the heroes this year.

Layered necklaces are going to get an Autumnal upgrade with stones like Amber or Tiger’s Eye featuring within gold pendants,” Says Rhi, “While interesting materials like frosted resin and twisted metals make for really eye-catching pieces too.
